World Wind Energy Resources

Wind Energy is on the go and in near future clearly seems to be the major source of Electricity as it is widely available and abundant in many parts of the world. According to the World Watch Institute, locations with high wind speed around the world could theoretically yield 13 times more electricity that is being currently produced worldwide............read more

MOVE THE ELECTRICITY METER FROM UNDER THE STAIRS

Energy saving tip of the day is:
The little gadget available in the market that has certainly cut our electricity use - proving that gadgets can help save the world. It's a little device that takes the electricity meter out from under the stairs to tell you how much electricity you are using as you are using it. It has found a permanent home on the kitchen worktop and I can now tell which appliances and lights are on around the house just by looking at it.

Energy saving tip of the day

Take at look at Google, who gets about 200 million queries a day. Let’s assume each query is displayed for about 10 seconds; that means Google is running for about 550,000 hours every day on some desktop. Assuming that users run Google in full screen mode, the shift to a black background will save a total of 15 (74-59) watts. That turns into a global savings of 8.3 Megawatt-hours per day, or about 3000 Megawatt-hours a year. Now take into account that about 25 percent of the are CRTs, and at 10 cents a kilowatt-hour, that’s $75,000, a goodly amount of energy and dollars for changing a few colour codes.”

Energy saving tip of day

Energy saving tip of the day is to save some power by keeping your computer cool by changing the clock speed for your processor, lower your vcore. Going from 1.5v to 1.45v on your processor, for example, droped the temp from 35C/45C idle/load, to 32C/40C and see the results the room will stay cool and less energy would be charged by the P.C.

Solar Vatican

The Vatican is going solar in a big way. The smallest country in the world recently announced that it intends to spend 660 million dollars to create what will effectively be Europe’s largest solar power plant. This massive 100 mw solar energy installation plan will provide enough energy to make the Vatican the first solar energy powered nation state in the world!

Solar energy by this solar plant will generate enough energy to power all of its 40,000 households. The solar energy plant installation will be located on a 740 acre site near Santa Maria di Galeria - the same place where the Vatican Radio’s transmission tower is located. The solar energy that it produces will be way above the needs of the entire Vatican, providing enough power to meet the needs of Vatican radio nine times over.
In his Environment energy posting Jorge Chapa also reported that ,these aren’t the only steps Vatican will be taking to reduce greenhouse emissions. It is contemplating using an electric pope mobile, the Vatican cafeteria will soon be decked with a solar heating system to provide heating and cooling, and even the Pope’s summer residence is being fitted out to get power from the methane generated by the horse stables. When looking for inspiration, the Pope clearly defers towards the heavens, but when looking for electricity, the sun is his choice.

Shipping Polution : The unaddressed issue

15 of the world giant cargo ships are accountable for emitting as much pollution as 760m cars. According to a study conducted that a one giant container ship emits almost same amount of asthma and cancer causing chemical 50m cars. More than 90000 ocean going cargo ships are responsible for 4.5 % of the global carbon emissions. Powerful nations so far have been unable to impose strict policies and a law on shipping industry which is alone in USA is causing 60,000 deaths every year. Much more Scrutiny is need and the issue should be addressed more seriously.

Cars driving 15,000km a year emit approximately 101 grammes of sulphur oxide gases (or SOx) in that time. The world's largest ships' diesel engines which typically operate for about 280 days a year generate roughly 5,200 tonnes of SOx.

What is the (green) point in buying a Hybrid Car that has been transported in a Cargo ship lumbering across the world's oceans at a leisurely pace emitting suicidal amounts of CO2 and SOX. That Hybrid or Environment friendly car becomes responsible for emitting GHG before hitting the road.

Energy saving tip of the day is to keep your appliances off a million tonnes of greenhouse gases are pumped into the atmosphere every year, by Switching off appliances at the mains and not on standby would save enough energy to power 2.7 million homes for a year.
Make it a habit to switch off appliances even to mobile phone and MP3 player chargers. It all makes a difference, but 71% of us admit to forgetting to switch off.

Pakistan's First Wind power plant opens on 19th

The First ever Wind Power plant of 50 MW in Jhimpir near Karachi is ready for inauguration on 19th April, 2009. All arrangements for launching of inauguration of this project have been completed. The CEO of Alternate Energy Development Board (AEDB) Mr. Arif Alauddin gave a detailed presentation to Federal Minister for Water and Power, Raja Pervez Ashraf in a meeting here today.

The CEO briefed the minister about the progress of the plant and informed him about the arrangements of the inauguration of the Wind Power Project. He apprised the meeting that the power generated from the first phase would be evacuated to Jhimphir grid station by HESCO and would be sufficient to electrify 6900 homes in Hyderabad region.

The Minister was informed that The Zorlu Enerji wind farm would be one of the cleanest power plants in the country displacing 10,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year, as compared to a fossil fuel power plant.

Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Minister for Water & Power lauded the efforts of the AEDB for undertaking the project that supports the government’s derive towards greater exploitation of renewable energy resources. He also thanked the Turkish firm for its assistance in helping Pakistan enter the era of wind energy. He said that this project shows the Pakistan government’s persistence at tapping indigenous Renewable Energy sources as a strategy to meet growing energy needs. He added that all out efforts are underway to mobilize all available resources for producing more electricity in the country to get rid of the prevailing menace of load shedding in the country.

Energy Saving Tips Last Week

Energy saving tip number one was to use a fan instead to keep cool during the summer. Energy saving by fans is dramatically more than air conditioners

Energy saving tip number two was to invest in a good exhaust system instead of a clumsy old air conditioning.

Energy saving tip number three was to keep your car properly maintained and tuned. A poorly tuned car can waste more than 25% more gas.

Energy saving tip number four was to wrap reflectors on water tanks to control the water temperature.
